Development is a multifaceted process whose comprehensive nature requires an interdisciplinary and multidisplinary approach. Whether examined at the national or international level, it is at the core of humanity. In pursuit of development, theorists and practitioners of development have experimented with various designs that have marked what may be described as paradigmatic shifts. The Third World, which spurns the continents of Africa, Latin America, and Asia has largely been described as underdeveloped. The reasons that account for the underdeveloped state of the third World remains fairly a controversial debate todate.Bearing in mind the significance of the development process and its influence on the progression of humanity, the School of Development and Strategic Studies (SDSS) was recently established as part of the restructuring process of academic programmes at Maseno University. As a School, it has a double-pronged mission of teaching and conducting research on development issues. Besides having undergraduates and postgraduate students, the School has other clients such as the surrounding local communities through what may be described as community outreach development programmes.
