BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE WITH IT

 INTRODUCTION

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science with Information Technology (IT) programme is designed to produce graduates who are both professionally competent and marketable and who should also be capable of conducting further in-depth studies and/or research work in their respective areas of specialization while at the same time appreciating the exigencies of the interactive physical, chemical, and biological processes that regulate the total Earth System, the unique environment that it provides for life, the changes that are occurring in this system, and the manner in which the changes are influenced by human actions. The programme is thus geared towards the rational management and exploitation of natural resources and the environment for sustainable development in Kenya with emphasis on the Lake region while at the same time addressing global environmental issues. At the end of the four year study, the graduates are expected to be well equipped with skills which can enable them secure employment in various organizations both public and private (including non-governmental organizations) and/ or self employment.

OBJECTIVE

The general objective of the Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science, with IT) programme is to produce specialized environmental graduates with strong foundations in the management of the environment. The specific objectives are to:

a) develop skills in Information Technology for assessing and resolving environmental issues, questions and problems;

b) promote participation in practical environmental activities with a view to enhancing local environmental quality and communities quality of life.

c) prepare students for future research interests in Environmental Science at both Masters and Ph.D. levels.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the four year study, the students are expected to have the following:

a) Skills in information technology, remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems for assessing and resolving environmental issues.

b) Capability for further in-depth studies in different aspects of the environment.

c) Ability to participate in practical environmental activities to enhance environmental qualities at local, regional and national levels.

d) A good academic foundation to pursue postgraduate degree programmes.

MODE OF DELIVERY

Face to face sessions involving students and lecturers. Contact hours are 42. Lectures, practicals, field visits and projects.

 INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS/ EQUIPMENT

Whiteboard, whiteboard marker, eraser, digital projector and a laptop are needed for the lecturer sessions.

The course materials include reference books, relevant Journals, presentations and links to additional materials will be placed at the University libraries.

 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be admitted to the programme, Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science, with IT), applicants must:

a) Satisfy the minimum entry requirements for admission to the university.

b) Satisfy the entry requirements for the admission to the School of Environment and Earth Sciences which must be at least a C+ in Chemistry, C+ in English or Kiswahili and B- in Biology or Geography.

DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME

The duration of the programme shall normally be four academic years.

THE PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The program offers courses in terms of units as defined by the university. There are core and elective courses. Core courses are mandatory, while elective courses may be chosen by students from an approved list of courses, in fulfilling the full-time load requirements as spelt by the university. The normal full-time load for one academic year shall be at least fourteen (14) units but not more than sixteen (16) units.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT

The common university examination regulations shall apply. Examinations shall be held at the end of the semester in which the courses are taught. All taught courses shall be assessed by a two-hour written examination constituting 70 percent of the total marks. Continuous Assessment Tests shall be based on written tests and assignments constituting 30 percent of the total marks. The total marks are 100 % and the pass mark for every course is 40%.

A candidate who fails 4 units and above in one academic year will not register and proceed to a subsequent year of study before passing all the failed units. Those who fail 3 units and below will proceed to next year of study, but are expected to resit the failed units in that year.

Examination grading system will be as follows:

50 – 59%  C
40 – 49%  D
0 – 39%  F

 

At the end of the fourth year, students shall undertake a 12 weeks industrial attachment. The students will be assessed in the place of attachment constituting 15 percent, confidential report from the onganization the student was attached constituting 15 percent and the research report constituting 70 percent of the total marks. NES 411 shall be examined by a supervised research proposal which is marked out of 30% and a supervised research report marked out of 70%.
