MASTER OF ARTS IN COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA STUDIES CURRICULUM

INTRODUCTION

The Master of Arts degree in Communication and Media Technology is designed to provide the student with a solid academic foundation while at the same time ensuring opportunities for craftsmanship in skills development and practical experience in electronic and print journalism, photojournalism, public relations development and cross-cultural communication.

OBJECTIVES

The programme aims to:

(a) Train highly qualified scholars in the study of communication and media

(b) Train researchers who can generate a body of knowledge in communication and media as a discipline of study.

(c) Develop a corpus of highly trained communication and media professionals.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

(a) The common admission requirements of the Maseno University School of Graduate studies for Masters Degree Programme shall apply.

(b) A B.A in Communication and Media studies from a recognized university.

(c) A first or higher degree in any discipline of the Natural Sciences; Social Sciences or Humanities from a recognized university

(d) A first degree and a graduate diploma in communication and media

DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME

The M.A degree programme in Communication and Media Technology shall take a minimum of two years and a maximum of four for full time students.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The curriculum comprises of a two-year programme covering four semesters, leading to the award of the Master of Arts in Communication and Media Studies degree. The curriculum consists of lectures, coursework, seminars examined at the end of each semester and project which is examined at the end of second semester of the second year. Those who opt for a dissertation shall start at the third semester of the course. Courses are offered in units, where a unit is a one-hour lecture per week per semester, two hours of tutorials or three hours of practical per week per semester.1.0 INTRODUCTION
