The Maseno University Literary Studies Department is a vibrant academic entity in which critical and divergent thinking is not only tolerated but also deliberately cultivated, nurtured and consolidated. Literary interpretations, critical theories and issues to do with gender in art, orature, colonialism and postcolonialism, form the main thrust of investigations.
It nurtures student’s capacity to produce creative works and also to critique works of art. For this reason, the students are introduced to diverse theories of literature from classical period, through modern to postmodern times. They would be expected to master concepts of aesthetics in the broad genres of literature such as poetry, the novel and drama. The texts selected for study would vary from time but they are spread from all the continents of the world. This programme, therefore enables the students to study cultural heritage and practices from different ethnicities but with special emphasis on Africa. At the end of the study period after examination, students qualify for the award of B.A, M.A, and PhD Degrees in Literature depending on what they registered to study.
