Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Business Administration and Economics



The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree Programme in Business Administration is designed for students seeking careers in research, teaching, consultancy and

professional business leadership in the following disciplines: Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, Strategic Management, Operations Management,

Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, Procurement and Supplies Management and Management Information Systems. The PhD Programme in

Business Administration strives to infuse quality and professional relevance in scholars and business leaders who can articulate and cope with emerging issues.


The overall objective of the programme is to equip students with a range of skills in research, teaching and consultancy necessary to become effective

academic scholars and practitioners in business administration, in order to respond to the needs of various stakeholders in today’s technology oriented

business world. The specific objectives of the programme are to:

a) To enhance critical thinking in the examination and analysis of contemporary and emerging issues;

b) Undertake independent research, teaching at university and other higher institutions of learning, both locally and internationally;

c) Develop relevant advanced knowledge and skills in Business Administration and Consultancy;

d) Produce graduates who can integrate theory and practice to work effectively and efficiently in organizations;

e) Promote ethics and ethical behavour.


Upon completion of the PhD Degree in Business Administration, the graduate shall have acquired knowledge, skills and attitude to:

a) Discover, harness, apply, disseminate and preserve advanced knowledge in area of specialization;

b) to teach in higher education institutions for their area of specialization;

c) Harness and apply theory and scholarly research to develop innovative approaches to business issues diverse environments;

d) Develop and apply critical thinking to business issues in support of managerial decision making;

e) Harness and apply ethical concepts in business administration;

f) Develop expertise in management of functional and cross-functional business operations;

g) Demonstrating original intellectual contribution to the field of knowledge


To qualify for admission into the doctoral programme an applicant shall be:

a) A Holder of a Masters degree in Business Administration of Maseno University, or of any other recognised University; or

b) Holder of other qualifications considered by Senate as equivalent to a Masters degree in Business Administration.


The duration of the PhD programme shall normally be a minimum of three (3) years and a maximum of five (5) years for a full time student.

A part-time student may be registered for a minimum of four (4) years and a maximum of seven (7) years.

Continuance of registration will depend on evidence of satisfactory progress reports.


Research and Supervision

a) A candidate registered for the PhD programme shall be required to pursue research under the guidance of a supervisor.

b) Senate shall normally appoint two supervisors for a candidate according to the University Examination Rules and Regulations for Post-Graduate Studies.


The University Examination Rules and Regulations shall apply.


The doctoral programme shall normally consist of thesis research only. However, level 8 (Masters level) course auditing shall normally be undertaken in areas of student deficiency. All audited course work shall normally be done within the first three semesters for both full time and part-time students.
