Maseno University Takes Part in the 10th All Africa University Games

Maseno University took part in the 10th All Africa Universities Games held between 6th and 10th June, 2022 in Kenyatta University. The event was organized by the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) and International University Sports Federation (FISU).  The Olympic model event, which saw the First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, H.E Margaret Kenyatta attend as the Chief Guest at the Opening Ceremony had over 1,000 athletes both male and female who competed in Soccer, Basketball, Athletics, Chess, Badminton, Karate, Table Tennis, Rollball, Sitting Volleyball, Volleyball and Swimming.. The event which brought together teams drawn from institutions of higher learning in the African continent was well attended by delegations from; Zambia, Guinea, Botswana, South Africa, Egypt, Mauritius, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and the hosts Kenya.

We were represented by Chess, Karate, Athletics and Badminton teams, who put up a spirited fight in their various events and eventually made it to the medal bracket. Maseno University finished position 13 with a total of 15 medals: 2 Gold, 4 Silver and 9 Bronze and came in second to the hosts Kenyatta University who finished top of the table amongst Kenyan Universities that took part in the event.

Badminton:  our athlete Fabian Derrick who’s a second year student weathered the storm in a highly contested singles category right from the initial matches and ended up playing in the finals! In the finals, Fabian went down two straight sets of 21: 12 against a seasoned opponent and was awarded a Silver medal.

Chess: In the Classical team event category, our Chess team made up of Clinton Shikuku, Samuel Mwaura and Vanessa Simiyu earned a Bronze medal (position 3). For the Blitz women Category, our athlete Vanessa Simiyu finished position two, earning a Silver medal.

Athletics:  The team was made up of Duncan Opondo, Geoffrey Makori and Dorcas Ongele. The first two athletes attained their season’s personal best while Dorcas Ongele attained a Bronze in Javelin courtesy of her season’s best throw of 29.03.

Karate: The team finished position two overal in Kumite for both men and women, achieving a Silver medal for the performance. Gold medalists were: Emmaculate Adhiambo in the Women Kumite +68kg and Brighton Owili in the Male Kumite +75kg. Silver medalist was: Kevin Odhiambo (+75kg) while the Bronze medalists were: Seline Anyango (+68kg), Joshua Emmanuel (+75kg), Linda Were (-68kg), Lennox Kassim (-75kg) and Ian Miller (-60kg).

This was quite an experience and great exposure for the Maseno University teams who are optimistic that they keep attending such events in future.
