PROGRESS AT THE SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION PARK

Maseno University office of the Coordinator, Science, Technology and Innovation Park has implemented the following activities;

  1.  A draft Science Technology and Innovation Policy has been developed.
  2. We developed 4 new high yielding maize varieties. These hybrids have successfully undergone National Performance Trials and have been recommended for release. Of these
     Maseno EH10 and EH11 were released by Ministry of Agriculture in June 2013.
  3. We have registered a seed Unit for Maseno University (Maseno University Seeds).
  4. We have developed a draft business plan for Maseno University Seed unit.
  5. We are in the process of establishing collaboration with the Seed Industry and other Stakeholders in agricultural technology generation and dissemination.
  6. Our new finger millet variety Maseno 60D was recommended for release in 2013. In addition 2 Striga weed resistant varieties were also recommended for release.
  7. We have improved research and innovation facilities at the Botanic garden by installing a digital weather station.
  8. We have acquired mechanized sorghum and millet threshers for research and demonstration.
  9. Future plans
  10. We intend to initiate seed multiplication, production and processing at the University Farm.
  11. We submitted a proposal to Land O’Lakes for consideration for funding to support and improve Maseno University seed Unit’s capacity to produce and market new crop seeds.
  12. Consequently, we have competitively secured a funding of 4.89 Million Kenya Shillings from Kenya Feed The future Programme to Enhance the capacity of Maseno University Seed Unit to deliver to market resilient new maize varieties in Western Kenya. This seed money will be used to initiate seed multiplication and to develop structures and business plan for the seed unit from August 2014 to August 2015.
