The 5th International Union of Physical and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) _Global Women Breakfast Workshop
International year of Basic Science and Sustainable Development (IYBSSD) is being observed this year; 2023. It is a significant UN/UNESCO initiative being led by the International Union for Physics, and one that is particularly relevant to African science and science education. Similarly UN day of women and girls in science falls on the month of February of every year. This year, the international Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGIS), was observed on 11th February, 2023, and the focus was on the role of women and girls in science as relates to the sustainable development goals.
The Chemistry Department through the School of Physical and Biological Science in partnership with IUPAC, Kenya Education Network and Royal Society of Chemistry organized for a one-day Workshop that took place on 14th February, 2023 at the university Amphitheatre. The event brought onboard people of all genders from all science disciplines and across all categories of academia including high school students, university students both undergraduate and postgraduate and university staff.
The theme of the workshop was “Breaking Barriers in Science” was discussed in details and from it several topics were highlighted including Gender inclusivity in science, Building professional networks, Mentor mentee relation, Funding Research collaborations and Transitional in career development of women in STEM related courses.
