Maseno University Empowers Farmers Through Practical Two-Day Agricultural Training
Maseno University has successfully concluded a two-day farmers’ training programme aimed at strengthening agricultural skills and promoting sustainable farming practices among local farming communities. The interactive training brought together farmers from across the region for an intensive learning experience facilitated by agricultural experts from both Maseno University and County Agricultural Offices.
The training was officially opened by the Ag Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration, Finance and Development (AFD), Prof. David Ongarora, alongside the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Partnerships, Research and Innovation (PRI), Prof. Regina Nyunja and the Director Linkages, Outreach and Consultancies Prof. Rose Ongati, underscoring the University’s commitment to community outreach and farmer empowerment through knowledge transfer.
The programme commenced with expert-led sessions delivered by facilitators and senior lecturers from Maseno University, including Dr. Portas Olwande and Mr. Johnson Kobiero, alongside Agricultural Extension Officers from Kisumu and Vihiga counties. Among the county representatives were Mr. Tobias Olwenu, the Sub-County Agriculture Officer, and a Livestock Production Officer from Luanda Sub-County representing Vihiga County. Their participation enriched the training by integrating academic knowledge with practical field experience drawn from local agricultural realities.
The training focused on equipping farmers with practical skills that directly enhance productivity and create income-generating opportunities. Key thematic areas covered included Piggery Farming, Horticulture Production, Agribusiness Management and Value Chain Development. Through interactive discussions and demonstrations, participants were introduced to modern farming techniques, efficient farm management practices and strategies for transforming agriculture into a sustainable and profitable enterprise.
A major highlight of the programme was a practical field visit to the Maseno University pig farm, where the institution rears pigs as part of its teaching, research and community outreach initiatives. During the visit, farmers gained first-hand experience in modern pig-rearing practices such as proper housing, feeding regimes, breeding management, and disease control.
The practical session also exposed participants to value addition opportunities within pig farming, showcasing products that can be derived from pigs and demonstrating how farmers can diversify their enterprises to increase household income and market competitiveness.
Participants lauded the hands-on approach adopted during the training, noting that the practical demonstrations helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-life farming applications. Many described the programme as timely and transformative, equipping them with skills they can immediately implement on their farms.
The training culminated in a certificate award ceremony recognizing the farmers’ successful participation. Certificates were presented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Partnerships, Research and Innovation, Prof. Regina Nyunja, alongside the Director of Linkages, Outreach and Consultancies, Prof. Rose Ongati. The ceremony symbolized not only the completion of the training but also the strengthening of collaboration between the University and the farming community.
The initiative reflects Maseno University’s continued commitment to community engagement, agricultural innovation, and knowledge dissemination. By empowering farmers with practical skills and research-based solutions, the University continues to play a vital role in advancing food security, sustainable agriculture, and economic empowerment within the region while bridging the gap between academia and society.
