Maseno University Partners with Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa to Advance Inclusive Education
Maseno University has strengthened its commitment to inclusive education through a strategic engagement with Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa. The meeting led by Prof. Regina Nyunja, Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Partnership, Research and Innovation, brought together University leadership and development partners to explore sustainable approaches to supporting learners with special needs through education and technology.
The engagement underscored the importance of collaboration in transforming learning experiences for students with disabilities. Both institutions emphasized that partnerships between universities, organizations and communities are essential in breaking barriers and creating equal opportunities for all learners.
Maseno University highlighted its dedication to inclusivity, noting that its infrastructure and academic environment provide a strong foundation for supporting students with special needs. The University continues to position itself as a center of excellence in research, innovation and capacity building, particularly in areas that promote equitable access to education.

As part of its ongoing support, Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa has provided assistive learning equipment, including computers and Orbit Readers, to enhance accessibility for learners with visual impairments. These tools have significantly improved students’ ability to access digital content and actively participate in academic programs.
Maseno University has also distinguished itself in training students who are proficient in the use of assistive technologies such as Braille and Orbit Readers. This has enabled learners with special needs to acquire relevant skills and confidently engage in both academic and professional environments.
Through this collaboration, students are set to benefit from expanded career opportunities. Graduates with special needs may be engaged by Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa and connected to a network of over 100 partner employers. These employers are working to meet the requirements of the Disability Act 2025, which mandates that at least 5 percent of their workforce be persons with disabilities.
The partnership therefore provides a vital link between education and employment, ensuring that learners are not only equipped with skills but are also supported in transitioning into meaningful careers.
Maseno University and Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in training, research and program implementation, as they work together to build a more inclusive and empowering educational environment.
