Maseno University Strengthens Inclusive Education through ICT Support for Visually Impaired Students
Maseno University’s Department of Special Needs Education and Rehabilitation has taken a significant step toward enhancing inclusive education after hosting Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa (KTBA) for a week-long training on Adapted Information Communication Technology (ICT).
The intensive training, which brought together staff and students, focused on equipping participants with practical skills to integrate assistive technologies into teaching and learning. In a major boost to the department, KTBA donated 13 computers and 12 Orbit Readers-Assistive Braille devices that enable visually impaired learners to access and read digital content independently. For many students, the donation represents more than just equipment, it also restores dignity and academic confidence.
The students faced numerous obstacles, particularly during examination periods. Some were forced to defer exams when they could not secure learner support assistants in time. The shortage of support personnel meant that not all students received the assistance they needed, leaving some to struggle silently. The newly acquired devices are expected to transform this experience by promoting independent learning, timely examination submission, and equal access to academic materials.
Recognizing that technology alone is not enough, the department’s staff convened a consultative session bringing together students, lecturers, and support staff who interact daily with learners. The open forum created a safe space for participants to voice their concerns and lived experiences.
During the session, it emerged that many students endure challenges quietly ranging from accessibility barriers to delays in academic support. The candid discussions shed light on gaps that had previously gone unnoticed.
Following the engagement, the department resolved to strengthen its support systems, improve communication channels, and ensure that learners receive timely and adequate assistance. Staff reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a more responsive and inclusive academic environment.
