Strategic Health Education Meeting Held at Maseno University with AMREF, Novo Nordisk Foundation, and CHAK Representatives

On May 21st, 2025, Maseno University hosted a high-level meeting with delegates from the Novo Nordisk Foundation and AMREF to explore collaborative opportunities in advancing Health Professional Education. The session, chaired by the Acting Vice-Chancellor (AFD), Prof. Stephen Ogendo—representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Julius Nyabundi—brought together key representatives from the School of Medicine and the partner organizations.
This engagement marks a significant step in an 18-month initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare training through strategic partnerships with universities across East Africa and India. The program, already implemented at institutions such as Kenyatta University, Kabarak University, St. Paul’s University, and the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, now welcomes Maseno University as a prospective partner.
Through this collaboration, the partners seek to elevate the quality of health professional education by aligning with Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET), strengthening faculty development, promoting digital learning, and expanding research capacity. AMREF, as a key partner, aims to extend the program’s impact by reaching over 200,000 professionals, 200 institutions, and 10,000 university staff and community members across East Africa.
This partnership underscores Maseno University’s commitment to fostering excellence in healthcare education and contributing to regional health sector development.
Key Concerns and Partnership Objectives
A key concern identified is the limited adoption of digital technologies, challenges in adapting to digital methodologies, and inadequate infrastructure—including laboratory facilities—in East African universities. This partnership aims to address these gaps by supporting institutions in developing targeted proposals to strengthen their systems, thereby enhancing health education for medical and allied health professions students.
Maseno University’s Commitment
Maseno University has reaffirmed its dedication to fostering meaningful partnerships that align with both national and global health priorities. The university underscores the importance of advancing student and staff development, promoting foundational and advanced health competencies, and integrating modern teaching approaches in line with the updated curriculum.
Collaborative Vision
This collaboration represents a significant stride toward reinforcing healthcare systems through high-quality education, research, and innovation. It also establishes a foundation for a future Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Maseno University and its international partners.
